Ukraine receives 254 soldiers' bodies from Russia

Ukraine has received the bodies of 254 of its soldiers from Russia, according to officials in Kiev on Friday.

Photos accompanying the announcement, which was made by the coordination centre for prisoners of war, showed several white lorries at an undisclosed checkpoint.

The Ukrainian authorities said several ministries and institutions, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, were involved in the repatriation process.

Of the returned soldiers, 221 had fought in the eastern Donetsk region, while others had been killed in the Zaporizhzhya and Luhansk regions.

No details were provided regarding the return of deceased Russian soldiers.

The deceased Ukrainian soldiers would first be identified before being handed over to their families for burial, the authorities said.

Amid the ongoing conflict, Ukraine and Russia engage in minimal direct communication, primarily limited to discussions on prisoner exchanges and the repatriation of deceased soldiers.

Russia invaded Ukraine at the end of February 2022 and has been waging a large-scale war of aggression against the neighbouring country ever since.
