Where James Forrest fits at Celtic next term following blistering end to 2023/24

Celtic veteran James Forrest enjoyed a renaissance towards the end of last season that helped his side achieve domestic double glory.

Despite being a peripheral figure for the first half of the campaign, the 32-year-old appeared at a vital time, repaying Brendan Rodgers’ faith that he is the ‘best winger’ on the books at Parkhead in terms of ability.

Now on international duty with Scotland at EURO 2024, Forrest has a shot at making history under Steve Clarke as the Tartan Army bid to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

Once his exploits there are over, the academy graduate will enjoy some downtime ahead of pre-season, but what type of role could he play in 2024/25?

James Forrest still has something to offer at Celtic

Given his age and injury struggles over the last few years, it is natural that Forrest has lost a bit of stamina; however, his ball manipulation, in-game intelligence and technique make him an invaluable option to have on the flank.

Overall, he notched seven goals and two assists in 28 appearances across all competitions last term despite only starting eight times [Transfermarkt].

According to Fotmob, this meant Forrest had Celtic’s best goals-to-minute ratio in the Scottish Premiership. He also came out on top in successful tackles per 90 minutes (1.5), and also won the ball most in the final third alongside having the highest combined Expected Goals + Expected Assists among the group (1.16 per 90).

What is more impressive about his late burst of form is his ability to thrive under pressure, with his double against Dundee during the run-in being a prime example.

Sometimes, there is no quantifiable gauge for someone who has been over the course; you simply need to admire their capacity to go to the wire once again.

Forrest may not often start for Celtic next campaign, but as an impact substitute, he could continue to be a key contributor moving forward.
