PSG sign Russia national team goalkeeper Matvey Safonov

Paris Saint-Germain have signed Russia national team goalkeeper Matvey Safonov on a five-year contract, the French champions said on Friday.

Safonov, 25, arrives from Russian Premier League side Krasnodar. No financial details were given but the transfer fee has been estimated at €20 million ($21.6 million).

"I’m really happy to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, one of the world’s biggest clubs in terms of its history and what it has won. I can’t wait to meet my new teammates, defend my new colours and make the fans proud. Allez Paris!” Safonov said in a club statement.

The switch will allow Safonov to play on the European stage as Russian clubs are banned from international competitions since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

PSG's first choice goalkeeper is Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma who however has not had a fully convincing past season. Donnarumma arrived on a free transfer from AC Milan in 2021.
