Griff O’Ferrall not taking much away from previous matchup vs. North Carolina

Dylan Widger | USA TODAY Sports

With a field of all ACC and SEC programs in the 2024 College World Series, we’re going to get some rematches from conference play. However, Virginia INF Griff O’Ferrall isn’t sure how much that will affect them, including in their opener in Omaha against North Carolina.

O’Ferrall discussed the Cavaliers’ familiarity with the Tar Heels ahead of their game on Friday at Charles Schwab Field. He said that they’re naturally going to look back at their series against them back in April. To him, though, there’s just only so much that they can take away considering they met back in the regular season and this is now the postseason.

“Yeah, to be honest with you, not a lot I don’t think,” O’Ferrall said. “I think this is a totally different — that was a couple of months ago. This is also — everyone is playing their best ball right now.”

“So, to be honest with you, I don’t think we can take much from it,” said O’Ferrall. “Obviously we’re going to maybe go back and watch some of it or just kind of see how we played against them, see how they played against us, some things they did maybe. But, as far as taking things from that series into now, I think it’s like a totally different season now.”

Virginia and North Carolina met just over two months ago for a three-game, Top-15 series in Charlottesville. The ‘Hoos took it at 2-1 after 14-11 and 7-2 wins on Thursday and Friday. They just missed the sweep of UNC with a 12-7 loss to them on Saturday.

The two wouldn’t have met in the ACC Tournament from Charlotte until the championship as they were on opposite sides of the bracket. Even so, neither made it past pool play on Friday anyways.

The bracket for the NCAA Baseball Tournament then set them up for a rematch. Virginia made it out of the Charlottesville Regional and Super Regional with sweeps of both. Meanwhile, North Carolina went 5-1 over their opening rounds to advance from Chapel Hill. That has now set up the date between the two on Friday.

The experience against one another will almost definitely play a factor for the Cavaliers and Tar Heels this afternoon. It’s just not as much of one to O’Ferrall as you’d think considering

“At this point, probably not too much.”
