What ex-Newcastle manager John Carver is doing now as fans spot coach at Euro 2024

Eagled-eyed Newcastle fans may have noticed a familiar face in the Scotland dugout as they faced Germany in the opening match of the 2024 Euros.

The 2024 Euros have finally kicked off with hosts Germany facing Scotland in the opening match of the tournament.

Both countries will be looking to have a good start to the tournament to give themselves the best possible chance of getting out of the groups.

Scotland have reached the Euros for the second tournament in a row after previously not qualifying since 1996.

However, Newcastle fans may have spotted a familiar face in the dugout who helped the Tartan Army reach Germany this summer.

John Carver is very famous around the Newcastle area. The 59-year-old has had two spells at the Magpies, however, the second was far more memorable than the first.

Joining in 2011 as part of Alan Pardew’s assistant manager, Carver helped guide Newcastle to a fifth-place finish a year later.

However, it all went downhill from there. After Pardew left for Crystal Palace in January 2015, Carver became the interim manager until the end of the season.

Here, he almost oversaw their relegation as they just survived on the last day. This was despite Carver previously claiming that ‘he was the best coach in the Premier League’. As a result, he was relieved of his duties at Newcastle at the end of the season.

Since then, Carver has managed to revive this career. After a short spell at Cypriot side AC Omonia as manager, he joined the coaching staff for the Scotland national team, becoming the assistant coach.

Since taking over as assistant coach in 2020 at Scotland, Carver has helped to transform the Tartan Army.

Alongside manager Steve Clarke, Scotland now regularly qualifies for tournaments. On top of the two European championship qualifications, the nation just missed out on the 2022 World Cup, losing to Ukraine in the playoffs.

Scotland has also seen multiple famous victories in recent years, including a 2-0 victory over Spain in March 2023.

Speaking on his time as a Scotland coach in 2020, Carter commented how ‘proud’ he was to be in the set-up.

When speaking to the Glasgow Times one part of his quotes said: “Everyone talks about me being English. I am, I am proud to be English but I am a proud Scotsman now and when we take on England I want to be a proud Scotsman from England!

“People have to believe that. You look at Terry Butcher who was Scotland assistant manager and did a good job. So I am following someone like Terry who was England captain which is quite something.

“I am proud to be part of this set-up. When Steve asked me, I couldn’t get here quick enough and to get in amongst them.”
