Rio Ferdinand says Man City have someone who is a better player than he was

Rio Ferdinand has suggested that one current Manchester City player is better than he was during his playing career.

The former defender made 689 senior club appearances and racked up 81 caps for the senior England team throughout his playing days.

Spending 12 years at Manchester United where he made 455 appearances across all competitions, the former centre-half won six Premier League titles, which is the same number that Pep Guardiola has won in eight years in charge of City.

With numerous players from the Manchester club featuring in this summer’s European Championship in Germany, Ferdinand has highlighted one of them he thinks is a better player than he was.

Rio Ferdinand ranks John Stones above himself

In a video recently shared on the Daily Mail Sport TikTok page, Ferdinand was involved in a challenge where he had to pick between players from the mid-2000s England squad and the current Three Lions team.

When asked to pick between himself or John Stones when building his ultimate England XI, the pundit went for Stones.

Stones has mirrored Ferdinand’s success

At the age of 30, the City defender has racked up 380 senior club appearances, 257 of which have been in a City shirt, winning numerous domestic and European titles in the process.

On the international stage, the centre-half has featured in 72 senior games for England ahead of this summer’s Euros.

Earlier this week, also in the build-up to the tournament, former City midfielder Dietmar Hamann highlighted Stones as a key figure for England due to how impressive he’s been for the Manchester club.

Bearing in mind how Ferdinand had such a long career and had a very successful time at Old Trafford, which led to him being inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame last year, it’s quite surprising that he picked Stones over himself in this instance.

This, therefore, showcases just how much the pundit admires the City star as a player.
