The European Union is preparing restrictions for Georgia after the country's parliament overrode a veto and finally adopted the controversial foreign agents law. Several options are currently being considered, according to Twitter (X) of Radio Svoboda correspondent, Rikard Jozwiak.
"The EU options paper on Georgian sent to member states. Short-term measures: pause financing, suspend high-level meetings," the journalist reported.
According to him, if the situation worsens, the EU may impose individual sanctions, visa restrictions for diplomatic passports, and reduce military aid to Georgia.
In case of significant deterioration, suspension of visa-free regime and halting European integration of Georgia are possible.
What preceded
On May 28, the Georgian parliament overrode President Salome Zurabishvili's veto on the controversial law on the Transparency of Foreign Influence.
This was an initiative of the pro-Russian ruling party Georgian Dream.
After the parliament overrode the veto, the law was effectively adopted.
