The 2024 College World Series got underway on Friday, June 14, as ACC foes North Carolina and Virginia squared off in the opening game in Omaha. It was the beginning of a 10-day stretch to crown a baseball national champion.
All told, eight teams make it to Omaha for the College World Series, winnowed down from the 64 teams that make the tournament field. Once in Omaha, the eight teams are divided into a pair of double-elimination brackets. The winners of those respective brackets face off in a best-of-three championship series to crown a national champion.

As the College World Series moved through the weekend, Virginia ended up being the first team eliminated from the bracket. Following losses to North Carolina and Florida State over the span of three days, the Cavaliers saw their season end.
On Monday, Florida and NC State played in an elimination game. In a do or die contest, the Gators came away victorious 5-4 to eliminate the Wolfpack. With Florida surviving and advancing, NC State was sent packing.
That led into Monday night’s game between Kentucky and Texas A&M, two winners from the weekend. The Aggies came out victorious, winning 5-1 to move fully into the winner’s bracket, while dropping the Wildcats into the elimination zone.
The action picked up again Tuesday afternoon with an ACC contest between Florida State and North Carolina. The Seminoles jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, then held on for a 9-5 victory to stave off elimination while sending the Tar Heels home.
The second elimination game of the day was postponed until Wednesday morning due to weather. When action finally began on Wednesday morning, Florida poured it on the Wildcats, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and never trailing from the point, going on to win 15-4 and elimination Kentucky. With the win, Florida advances to rematch with Texas A&M on Wednesday night.
In the second game of Wednesday’s slate, the first team punched its ticket to the finals. Tennessee used a strong offensive showing to defeat Florida State 7-2 in a rematch of Friday’s opener, sending the Volunteers to the national championship for the first time since 1951.
To close out Wednesday, Texas A&M put together a complete performance against a Florida team playing its second game of the day. The Aggies came away with the 6-0 shutout victory to punch their ticket to the finals, meaning there will be a first-time champion as they take on Tennessee.
