The 2024 College World Series got underway on Friday, June 14, as ACC foes North Carolina and Virginia squared off in the opening game in Omaha. It was the beginning of a 10-day stretch to crown a baseball national champion.
All told, eight teams make it to Omaha for the College World Series, winnowed down from the 64 teams that make the tournament field. Once in Omaha, the eight teams are divided into a pair of double-elimination brackets. The winners of those respective brackets face off in a best-of-three championship series to crown a national champion.

Here are the teams participating in the 2024 College World Series, listed in alphabetical order.
And after five days jam-packed with high-level play, there were just two teams still standing: No. 1 national seed Tennessee and No. 3 seed Texas A&M. The Aggies and Volunteers met once prior in 2024, a 7-4 win for Tennessee in the SEC tournament weeks prior.
But on Saturday night in Omaha, the Texas A&M offense jumped all over the Tennessee pitching early to power a 9-5 win.
The Aggies went ahead 1-0 when leadoff hitter Gavin Grahovac hit a lead off home run to the opposite field and didn’t look back, pouring on seven runs in three innings, including putting up a five-run 3rd frame. That offensive push gave starting pitcher Ryan Prager plenty of cushion as he completed four innings of two-run baseball, striking out six on short rest.
Kaeden Kent punctuated the night — and helped keep Tennessee at arms length — with a two-run shot of his own in the top of the 7th inning to put the Aggies up, 9-2, at the time. Kent finished with four RBI.
The Volunteers would plate a trio of runs in the bottom of the 8th, perhaps a sign of things to come in Game 2, but the late burst wasn’t enough to close the sizable gap on the scoreboard as the Aggies moved a win away from an elusive national championship.
In Game 3, things started quickly for Tennessee as Christian Moore ripped a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. After the Aggies tied it up in the top of third, the Volunteers answered back.
Dylan Dreiling hit a sacrifice fly to go up 2-1 and then Dean Curley singled into left field to extend the lead 3-1. Once the game progressed to the 7th inning, Texas A&M threatened with two runners on and one out. But, the Aggies were unable to score.
In the bottom half of the inning, Dreiling struck again, this time with a two-run home run to put Tennessee up 5-1. Kavares Tears added another run with a double to make it 6-1.
The Aggies wouldn’t go home without a fight though, scoring two in the top of the 8th. Hayden Schott drove one in and followed by Caden Sorrell, making it 6-3. Despite putting up two runs in the ninth, Texas A&M fell short and Tennessee were crowned national champions.
