Southampton are reportedly among the Premier League teams in talks with a £38million-rated Serie A player.

Southampton look set to spend well during this summer’s transfer window, which officially opened for business on Friday.

Russell Martin’s side may also spend big on another loan man on Flynn Downes, with West Ham open to negotiating a permanent deal with Southampton.

Southampton in talks with Juventus man Matias Soule

Reports coming out of Italy now say Southampton are among the teams who are in talks with the representatives of Matias Soule at Juventus.

Soule, 21, was linked with the Saints earlier this year and has just capped an impressive season on loan with Frosinone in Serie A.

The Argentine attacker scored 11 goals and assisted three more in 36 Serie A appearances for Frosinone, who were eventually relegated to Serie B.

Reports via Tutto Juve claim that Soule’s representatives ‘are continuing their rounds in the Premier League’, with Southampton, along with Leicester City and West Ham in the running.

Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are also keen on signing Soule this summer. But Juventus apparently value the youngster at 40million (£33.86million).

Can Southampton afford a deal for Matias Soule at Juventus

Southampton are reportedly in line for a £140million after winning promotion to the Premier League, through broadcasting revenue and such.

So there’s money to be spent at St Mary’s. But with £20million going towards Harwood-Bellis, and Martin surely keen to spend whatever it takes to sign Downes, that £140million has already had a sizeable chunk taken out of it.

What’s certain is that Southampton need to spend this summer if they’re to stand a chance of beating the drop next season.

The Saints will be backed to struggle and so Martin may want one or two marquee signings in attack to ensure his side have the necessary firepower.

Soule would be just that. But with the likes of West Ham and Leverkusen interested, the latter having Champions League football next season, signing Soule could be difficult.

And Juventus could yet make plans for him in their first-team, after his impressive 2023/24 season, so this is a potential signing that certainly looks to have a lot of pitfalls.
