Former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy — the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft — just wrapped up minicamp and OTAs with the Minnesota Vikings. McCarthy is in a quarterback room with Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens, most notably, and will compete for the starting quarterback job.
McCarthy has been studying his play book and getting the offense down — and that’s about the extent of his expectations for his rookie campaign, to control what he can about his preparation and play.
The former Michigan national champion was asked about his offseason plans during a media session this week, and his answer showed his dedication to improvement.
“I’ve been doing a lot of traveling post national championship, so we’re not going to go to too many places or anything like that,” McCarthy said. “We’re gonna stay here in the great state of Minnesota and enjoy this weather and maybe do a little bit of golfing.
“But I’m just gonna be in the facility as much as I possibly can and focus on building habits that I can rely on when it starts getting hectic and crazy in training camp. So, yeah, I’m just gonna be here working my butt off.”
On a recent experience on the ‘Rich Eisen Show,’ the Vikings’ head coach discussed how the Michigan star looked this spring.
“He’s had a great spring,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said. “He’s off to a really good start transitioning into a new offense [with a] bunch of new teammates [and] new players. He gets a ton of work throughout routes on air and even in 7-on-7 [drills] where we were going full speed on all that stuff with some of the first group throughout the spring.
“So, [McCarthy’s] gotten a good acclimation to what our offense is really all about. He’s starting to show some ownership of it, and [he’s] growing every single day.”
Michigan landed a commitment from Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga four-star safety Kainoa Winston, the No. 95 overall player in the country per the On3 Industry Ranking.
