Kings Food Markets is closing this Morris County store, which could affect 61 employees’ jobs

Kings Food Markets is closing its Chatham location in a few months.

Kings Food Markets is closing its Chatham, New Jersey, location at the beginning of September due to “real estate considerations.”

Albertsons Companies announced that the Morris County grocery store at 393 Main Street would close by September 1, 2024, according to Patch.

The closure is expected to impact about 61 employees, who could be out of a job after the store is shuttered. However, “Associates who are interested in remaining with the company will have the opportunity to be reassigned to open positions at nearby stores,” Albertsons said.

Kings, which used to be headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in 2020.

A spokesperson said that the closure of the Chatham location was unrelated to the Albertsons Companies and Kroger supermarket merger.

The merger has been the subject of a major lawsuit brought by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and eight states to stop the deal, according to Reuters. They argue that the merger will increase grocery prices nationwide.

The two companies are selling 579 locations combined to C&S Wholesale Grocers. According to Albertsons, none of the stores they are selling are located in New Jersey.

Fifteen other Kings Food Markets remain in New Jersey, including stores in Boonton, Florham Park, Mendham and Morristown. That’s after the company closed its locations in Maplewood, Hoboken South and Gillette, New Jersey, in 2020.

Kings operates two other upscale grocery stores in the U.S.: one in Old Greenwich, Conn., and one in Garden City, N.Y. (Long Island).

Its parent company, Albertsons, operates over 2,200 stores in 34 states and Washington, D.C.
