Homecoming transfer for 2017 Rangers signing sees career crossroads after Ligue 1 offer

Rangers will be looking for more goals this summer as Philippe Clement looks to build the sort of team capable of winning at home and competing abroad.

As with last year, a lot of senior players left the club and there will need to be quantity as well as quality arriving through the doors at Ibrox.

After months of speculation, one Rangers career that came to an end before the manager arrived continues on a downward spiral with the latest transfer news highlighting a spectacular fall from grace.

Rangers exit woes continue for Morelos on downward spiral

Alfredo Morelos annoyed every manager that he had in his time in Glasgow, other than Pedro Caixhina who brought him to the club in 2017.

Almost every complaint was about attitude to fitness and a player, who was undoubtedly talented, not adhering to a lifestyle that a professional should adopt.

The low point being Giovanni van Bronckorst suspending him prior to Champions League qualifiers against PSV Eindhoven.

That nobody was particularly aggrieved when Morelos left Rangers, tells its own sorry story about how is time ended at the club.

When he joined Santos, it seemed like a great chance to reset and to kick-start a career that was in danger of heading in the wrong direction:

“Obviously I didn’t play much because I had a very complicated injury, but I scored 12 goals.

“Obviously I didn’t play almost every game as a starter. We’re going to work to get Santos out of this situation.

“I’ve done well in European tournaments. I’m very proud of that. It was something beautiful for me. Now I’m living a new stage.

“The decision to come to Santos was important for my career.

“I’d been in Europe for six seasons.

“The Brazilian league is very important. It will obviously help me grow as a footballer. I’ve signed a two-year contract and I hope to do really well here.

“We know that Santos are in a bad situation, but we’re going after the goal of getting the team out of the bottom half of the table.”

Morelos career now in terminal decline after Colombia move link

To say that Santos hasn’t worked out or gone to Morelos’ plan is an understatement.

With just four goals scored, he has seen his contract be considered for cancellation on several occasions due to form and fitness.

According to The Rangers Review, Atletico Junior are looking to end his spell in Serie B with the Brazilian giants which would see Morelos return to his homeland for the first time since he was a teenager.

At only 27-years old (he’s 28 in a matter of weeks), Morelos is making the sort of move that he should have been planning for the latter days of his career.

The Colombian was an established international at his peak and capable of causing some of Europe’s best defenders sleepless nights, form that saw him the subject of a £16.25m offer from Lille.

He had the ability and the opportunity, unforunately, he just doesn’t have the attitude needed to fulfill his dream of playing regular Champions League football in one of Europe’s best leagues.

Talks of any return to Rangers should now, finally, be put to bed.
