‘Throwing his arms up’: Andros Townsend really disappointed with £60m Liverpool player at Euro 2024

Liverpool have a number of players at UEFA Euro 2024, and one of them is Dominik Szoboszlai.

Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 for £60 million and made an immediate impact.

The Hungary international midfielder’s ability to carry the ball from midfield, play in a box-to-box role, and shoot with force saw him compared to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

Szoboszlai is only 23, so perhaps it did not come as a huge surprise that he struggled for consistency in the second half of the season.

There was a hamstring injury, and then Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also dropped him.

Szoboszlai will be looking to impress new Liverpool boss Arne Slot by performing well for Hungary at UEFA Euro 2024.

The Liverpool youngster was in action against Switzerland in Group A on Saturday, and Andros Townsend was not particularly impressed with his antics.

The former Everton and Newcastle United player was on co-commentary duty for the match on ITV 1.

Andros Townsend gives verdict on Dominik Szoboszlai

The Luton Town winger noted that Szoboszlai was often getting frustrated and was throwing his arms around.

Townsend noted about Szoboszlai in the 56th minute of the match on ITV 1 (June 15, 2024): “No, when you have got a player like Szoboszlai, he is your talisman, he is your captain, he is your leader, he is your best player.

“You need his energy. You feed off his energy. You need him to be positive.

“You can’t have him throwing his arms up, walking around the pitch with a face on him.”

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai will get better for Hungary

Szoboszlai was not at his best against Switzerland, but the Liverpool midfielder still provided the assist for Hungary’s goal.

It was an excellent cross and demonstrated what the 23-year-old is capable of.

There were signs during the match that Szoboszlai was not completely fit, but he will get his match fitness back as he continues to play in the competition.

Hungary fans will hope that the Liverpool midfielder does better against Germany and Scotland. Jamie Carragher has high hopes for Szoboszlai at Euro 2024.

Against Switzerland, the Liverpool midfielder played two key passes, had a pass accuracy of 85%, took 63 touches, attempted one dribble, made one tackle and three clearances, and put in four crosses.

Szoboszlai made 45 appearances for Liverpool last season. He scored seven goals and gave four assists in those games.
