‘His intelligence is exceptional’: David Moyes blown away by playmaker Liverpool are scouting

The UEFA Euro 2024 is underway now, and you would expect Liverpool to keep an eye on the competition.

Liverpool will have a number of their players in action in Germany, including Diogo Jota of Portugal and England international star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Hungary midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was in action against Switzerland on Saturday, while Andy Robertson played for Scotland against Germany on Friday.

Liverpool bosses will also be monitoring UEFA Euro 2024 for potential new signings.

One of them will be Florian Wirtz. HITC reported last month that Liverpool scouted the Germany international attacking midfielder in the UEFA Europa League final.

Wirtz was in action for Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta in the final in Dublin. Manchester City were also present at the match to watch the 21-year-old. Bayern Munich are monitoring Wirtz as well.

The Bayer star played for Germany against Scotland in Group A on Friday evening. He opened the scoring after 10 minutes.

Moyes said about Wirtz on BBC Match of the Day: “He can play in so many different positions.

“His ability to make double and treble runs and actually if people start to watch him over the competition, I think they will see someone who is going to go on and be a big, big star in the future.

“He is so difficult to play against. Great balance on the ball. He looks a really good player.

“He lacks a little bit of physicality at the moment because he is still young and the way he plays, but his intelligence is exceptional.”

Arsenal missed out on Florian Wirtz

Wirtz has been on the books of Bayer since 2020 and has established himself as one of the best attacking midfielders in the Bundesliga.

The youngster scored 18 goals and gave 20 assists in 49 matches in all competitions last season.

Wirtz found the back of the net four times and provided eight assists in 25 competitive appearances for Bayer in 2022-23.

Before Wirtz was starring for Bayer, he was at Koln from 2010 until 2020, and it was there that Arsenal spotted him.

According to former Gunners scout Yousuf Sajjad, Arsenal were impressed by the young Wirtz, but the Premier League club did not make an attempt to bring him to North London.

Sajjad told Rising Ballers: “There was actually a period where he was at Koln, he was coming towards the end of his contract.

“Of course, you could see the level of player he was but he had also that season quite a few injuries, so he was playing, he wasn’t playing.

“It was almost like, at that point, it was just not something that they were keen on at that moment, or at least he was keen on pursuing at that moment.”
