‘I wouldn’t have imagined’: Gary Neville in disbelief over player Tottenham Hotspur sold for £30m

Tottenham Hotspur may not have won a lot of silverware over the years, but they have had some brilliant players in recent times.

England international star Harry Kane became a world-class striker at Tottenham Hotspur.

Christian Eriksen, who is now at Manchester United, also rose to prominence while he was at Tottenham.

Spurs fans will long remember the partnership between Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen at the back.

If you go a bit further back, there was Gareth Bale, who starred for Tottenham before becoming a serial UEFA Champions League winner with Real Madrid.

Luka Modric is another former Tottenham player who achieved a lot after leaving the North London club.

Now 38, Modric joined Spurs from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008 and moved to Madrid in 2012 for £30 million.

The Croatia international has gone from strength to strength at Madrid and is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time.

Modric has won La Liga four times and the UEFA Champions League six times with Madrid.

Gary Neville amazed by former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric

Former Manchester United and England international defender Gary Neville has raved about Modric and has admitted that he did not think that the midfielder would develop into the player he has after leaving Spurs.

Neville said about Modric on ITV 1 (4:35 pm, June 15, 2024): “Do you know something? The worst types of players are these players because they don’t go past you, they don’t dribble past you with electric pace, but what they do is you can never get near them.

“I wouldn’t have imagined he would have been someone I would have looked at and thought he is a massive threat.

“The way in which he has developed as a central midfield player, obviously in the last seven, eight or 10 years at Real Madrid.

“At Tottenham, he was played a little bit forward as well. I just think the way the game has developed, it’s perfect for him to go and be able to go as long as he wants.”

Luka Modric still follows Tottenham Hotspur

It has been over a decade since Modric left Tottenham, but he still has a place in his heart for the North London club.

Earlier this year, Modric spoke with fondness of his time at Tottenham and praised his then Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.

The Croatia international midfielder even suggested that he could be open to a return to Tottenham, although he admitted that at the age of 38, it is unlikely that he will play in England again.

“Coming to Tottenham was the right decision,” he told PL Stories: The Croatian Touch on Optus Sport. “If I could have written the script for how my career would develop, I couldn’t have written it better than how everything has turned out. When you leave the Premier League, you don’t just stop following it. I follow the league, especially the teams with Croatian players. Course, I still follow Tottenham.

“I can only say great things about Harry [Redknapp]. He is a great coach but what impressed me even more is how he is as a person – a phenomenal man. He helped me a lot while I was at Tottenham until I left. I am forever grateful and I have happy memories working with him.”

When asked if he would ever return to the Premier League, Madrid said: “It will be difficult at my age, but you never know.”
