'Excellent' player has now been spotted in training after last featuring for Derby County in September 2023

A former Derby County loanee has been spotted in training after suffering a serious injury with the club last year.

Derby County made 12 signings last summer ahead of their promotion-winning campaign.

A number of them played a key role in their top two finish, with the likes of Curtis Nelson and Sonny Bradley forming a regular partnership in defence.

A number of other arrivals didn’t enjoy quite as much success, while Elliot Embleton’s stay on Pride Park lasted only a matter of months.

The midfielder joined on loan from Sunderland on transfer deadline day after spending nine months on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage.

Embleton had won promotion from League One twice in the previous two years, including scoring in the play-off final in 2022.

However, he was unable to make an impact on Derby’s season as he managed only one appearance in the second game of the season before picking up a season-ending injury.

Embleton was taking a corner during a training session in September when he suffered a freak thigh injury that forced him to cut his loan spell short and return to Wearside.

The 25-year-old has been out of action all season, with the 1-1 draw against Portsmouth at the start of the season proving to be his only appearance in 18 months.

Embleton looks to be closing in on full fitness though, having been spotted in training during the off-season.

Elliot Embleton back on the grass after Derby County injury

CL Football Academy shared a photo of him training with some current and former Sunderland players, with the caption that read: “Brilliant session today with some top pros, Dan Ballard, Elliot Embleton and Denver Hume in for a pre season session.

“Loved working with this lot, standards through the roof and the demand always so high.

“All the best for the coming season!”

The Rams thankfully didn’t miss him last season

Embleton had enjoyed plenty of success in League One previously, netting nine goals and providing nine assists in the third tier.

The ‘excellent’ midfielder could have been a vital player for the Rams as he looked to get back to his best, while his experience in the play-offs could have been even more important if Paul Warne had failed to guide them to automatic promotion.

Embleton wouldn’t have been a bad signing again this summer if Derby were still in League One, but they will be glad that his injury didn’t affect their bid for Championship football in the end.
