Euro 2024 defender Liverpool have held talks with could now be available for less than £30m

Liverpool are certain to be busy in the summer transfer window given that it is Arne Slot’s first chance to bring new faces in.

The new manager will need to be backed by the powers that be at Anfield if he is to successfully take over from Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutchman has big boots to fill in the dugout given the superb job that his predecessor did over the years, with new players set to help him achieve exactly that.

And one area that he could take a very close look at is defence, with the Reds not exactly covering themselves in glory in that area last season.

Captain fantastic Virgil van Dijk and full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson should be kept at all costs, but perhaps there is a need for a new centre-back.

Liverpool target David Hancko’s price tag emerges

Ibrahima Konate hasn’t always been in top form during his Reds career, while Joe Gomez has often proven himself to be more useful at full-back than centrally.

Jarell Quansah meanwhile is only in the early stages of his career and so lacks experience, while Joel Matip has moved on following the expiry of his contract, meaning Slot is likely to target a new central defender as soon as possible.

One player that Liverpool have held talks with over a move to Anfield is Feyenoord’s central defender David Hancko.

And according to Mundo Deportivo, the 26-year-old could leave the Dutch club for ‘much less’ than his market value of €35million (£29.6million).

The publication added that Hancko did only just extend his Feyenoord deal in February, but included in the contract was the agreement that the Eredivisie side will listen to any interesting offers if and when they arrive.

Will Arne Slot be keeping tabs on David Hancko?

Hancko, who can play at centre-back or left-back, and currently at Euro 2024 with Slovakia, having made 38 appearances for his country so far.

He is, of course, a player that Slot knows very well thanks to their time together at Feyenoord, where the defender made 48 appearances in all competitions last season.

His versatility will be looked upon favourably by the new Liverpool manager, who may just have an eye on the centre-back over the coming weeks.

Slovakia have been handed a tough draw in Germany, with the nation taking on Belgium, Ukraine and Romania in Group E.

Liverpool meanwhile will be keen to improve upon last season’s defensive record, even if it was the third-best in the Premier League.

Their 41 goals conceded was, however, well behind the 29 of Arsenal and the 34 of Manchester City, and needs to be bettered if they are to win the title next time out.
