Ex-federal prosecutor recalls first Trump admin’s retaliation against feds: 'We haven’t seen anything yet'

During Sunday's episode of MSNBC's The Weekend, former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirshner warned of the retaliation tactics he would expect Donald Trump and his administration to use if he wins in November.

Amid his prosecutions and convictions, the former president has promised revenge and retribution to his faithful MAGA voters. Trump ally Steve Bannon — who's expected to report to prison in two weeks for a four-month sentence following his conviction for contempt of Congress in 2022 — used similar language during his speech at Saturday's Turning Point Action’s "The People’s Convention" conference.

"January 20, 2025 is accountability day," Bannon said, claiming that Trump's political opponents will be "investigated, prosecuted and incarcerated."

Referring to Bannon and other MAGA allies, The Weekend co-host Alicia Menendez emphasized, "They are becoming increasingly specific about how they will do it and they are becoming increasingly specific about who they are going after. The fact that he is, by name, referencing Lisa Monaco, that tells you it is not some vague plan but actually something they are beginning to plot out."

Kirshner noted, "I know Lisa Monaco. She is a good, fair, honest and career federal employee who has been doing the hard work of the American people and i can quibble with some of the decisions that she and attorney general Merrick Garland have made and not moving quickly enough. Let's set that aside."

"Can I just offer one concrete example of what the Trump administration did to retaliate against federal prosecutors when they didn't like what they were doing?" Kirshner asked.

"When I was still a fed, my last of 10 U.S. attorneys that I worked for was Jessie Lou. Terrific, strong, independent United States attorney for the District of Columbia. Donald Trump wanted Andy McCabe prosecuted. So, an investigation was referred to my old office after I left, and they investigated him, and guess what, no evidence of crime. So Jessie Lou did not approve an indictment for Andy McCabe. What did Trump and Bill Barr do? They ran her out on a rail. Even though she had performed admirably as the DC U.S. attorney. They promised her a job over at treasury. And when she left the U.S. attorney's office, they yanked that job. They yanked everything out from underneath her. And I think we will look back and say, 'Oh, that was a quaint way to deal with somebody that Donald Trump didn't like.'"
