Ferrari take back-to-back wins at 24 Hours of Le Mans

Ferrari survived a late drama to claim back-to-back wins and third place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Sunday.

Nickas Nielsen, Antonio Fuoco and Miguel Molina took the chequered flag in the Ferrari 499P with a 14-second margin over the Toyota GR010 HYBRID of Nyck de Vries, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez.

The second Ferrari car with Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi rounded out the podium.

There was drama in the penultimate hour as the right-side door of the winning car began flapping quickly and Nielsen was forced to bring the car back into the pits. He was however able to hold the lead over the Toyota.

Pre-race favourites and polesitters Porsche had to settle for fourth, while Mick Schumacher had a disappointing debut at the legendary endurance race.

His Alpine team saw both of their cars retiring less than six hours into the race due to a "suspected engine issue," the team said on Saturday. Schumacher drove for 33 laps.

The 92nd edition of Le Mans was marked by several safety car phases lasting almost seven hours, mostly due to heavy rain and a large number of accidents.
