Monchi targeting wrong Juventus players in Douglas Luiz swap, Aston Villa need one star instead

Aston Villa president of football operations, Monchi, is targeting the wrong Juventus player in the swap deal that will see Douglas Luiz head to Italy.

Aston Villa‘s financial situation has been well publicised, with the club needing an injection of cash in order to avoid breaching Premier League profit and sustainability regulations (PSR).

It is for this reason that the club look set to give Jhon Duran the green light to seal a move to Chelsea, with the Stamford Bridge club expected to spend around £40 million on the Colombian.

However, the deal that has Villa fans most concerned is one that will see Douglas Luiz head to Juventus.

With Villa valuing the Brazilian at around £50 million, latest news suggests Juventus are looking to find a way around paying this fee and are instead offering £16 million plus Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior in exchange for Luiz.

This deal seems to be edging closer to conclusion, but Monchi should be targeting a different Juventus player rather than the aforementioned duo.

Aston Villa should target Andrea Cambiaso in Douglas Luiz swap

Whilst McKennie is a midfielder, he is a very different profile of player to Luiz who is an aggressive ball-winner as well as the tempo-setter in possession.

McKennie is more of a box-to-box midfielder, similar to Youri Tielemans and John McGinn and Villa would therefore need to sign a holding midfielder player in addition to McKennie to fill the Luiz void.

Iling-Junior is a talented winger, but it would be difficult to argue he is ahead of Leon Bailey, Moussa Diaby or Morgan Rogers in terms of his ability currently so neither player is really what Villa need currently.

Villa are looking to upgrade both full-back positions, with manager Unai Emery wanting an upgrade on both Matty Cash on the right and Lucas Digne and Alex Moreno on the left.

They could do that with one signing if Monchi can renegotiate the terms of the Luiz swap to include fullback Andrea Cambiaso instead of McKennie and Iling-Junior.

The beauty of Cambiaso is that not only is he a full-back – which is a position Villa need – but he is equally comfortable playing on either the right or the left.

This owes to his two-footedness, with the 24-year-old showing almost no difference in quality regardless of which foot he uses.

Currently on international duty with Italy, Cambiaso is a player of real class and energy who can also play in central midfield or as a wide midfield player.

The skillset the Italian possesses would arguably be far more useful for Villa when you consider what they need and he is a player of the level that could genuinely improve the side rather than just add numbers to the squad depth.
