Coming off its national championship win in January, Michigan and new head football coach Sherrone Moore are looking to parlay that into some major momentum on the recruiting trail.

June has been a big month for the Wolverines — who are starting to pick up steam on the trail. The Big Ten program’s class now features 12 commitments after seven pledges this month alone.

Michigan Class Breakdown

Of the Wolverines’ eight commitments, only two hail from the state of Michigan: four-star Franklin Wylie Groves offensive lineman Avery Gach and four-star Howell defensive lineman Bobby Kanka. Of those pledges, five are expected to play on the defensive side of the ball at the next level, leaving seven for the offensive side.

Their top two commitments are on the defensive side of the ball, with Oak Park (Ill.) Fenwick defensive lineman Nate Marshall and Montgomery Village (Md.) Gonzaga four-star safety Kainoa Winston. Each ranks among the top 100 recruits nationally in the On3 Industry Ranking.

Eight blue-chippers are in the class in total, including the likes of Savannah (Ga.) IMG Academy four-star running back Donovan Johnson, Palatine (Ill.) four-star defensive lineman Jaylen Williams and New Orleans Archbishop Shaw four-star wide receiver Jacob Washington.

Top Wolverines Offensive Commit: QB Carter Smith

Even prior to Moore taking over as head coach from Jim Harbaugh, the Wolverines had their centerpiece of the class locked in with Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot four-star quarterback Carter Smith.

Smith chose U-M over Florida, Miami and a handful of programs. And now with him in the fold, Michigan has not only a quarterback but an extra recruiter as well.

“I’ve seen everything I need to see,” Smith told The Wolverine. “For me, it’s mainly about getting around some of the other recruits. I’m going to be selling The Big House and what we have to offer. There are some great names on the list, so I’m excited to get out there.”

Top Defensive Commit: DL Nate Marshall

Illinois has been a hotbed for the Wolverines over the past few decades, and they’ll look to continue that. In April, they landed Marshall, one of the state’s top players and the nation’s No. 4 defensive lineman.

On3’s Scouting and Rankings team writes this about him as a prospect:

“Bendy big man that has unbelievable balance and body control for his stature combined with the power and explosiveness that makes him borderline unblockable at the point of attack. Two-way player that lines up at tight end and wide receiver as well. Measured in at 6-foot-4, 270 pounds during summer campus visits. Tested well in agility drills during camp settings. Great weight distribution throughout his frame. Possesses excellent raw power and shock in his hands. Has the ability to rush the passer from the edge if asked to do so. Will develop proper pad level and contact initiation at the next level with collegiate coaching. Has tremendous upside due to frame and athletic tools. Best football is ahead of him.”
