BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer has given his take on the performance produced by Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold for England against Serbia on Sunday evening.
Alexander-Arnold is a right-back by trade, but the Liverpool star started in midfield for England in their opening UEFA Euro 2024 Group C game against Serbia.
England head coach Gareth Southgate deployed Alexander-Arnold alongside Declan Rice in holding midfield.
The 25-year-old came off in the 69th minute, as the Three Lions went on to register a 1-0 win against Serbia.
Former Newcastle United and England international striker Alan Shearer was on co-commentary duty for the match for BBC One.

The BBC Sport pundit was impressed by the display produced by Alexander-Arnold in midfield and praised him when he was substituted.
Shearer said about Alexander-Arnold in the 70th minute of the match on BBC One (9:29 pm, June 16, 2024): “He has done well in there, Trent, certainly in that first 30 or 35 minutes.
“Played some good passes, timing of his tackling in front of the back four was really good as well.”

It was not exactly one of the best performances from Alexander-Arnold in midfield.
There was a moment in the first half when he lost the ball cheaply near his own goal. Aleksandar Mitrovic almost scored.
Perhaps against a better opposition, Alexander-Arnold, considered a dream player by talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino, could have been tested more, but he did a relatively decent job for England on Sunday.
The 25-year-old took three shots and one of them was on target.
Alexander-Arnold also had a pass accuracy of 90.7%, took 60 touches, made one tackle, two interceptions, and one clearance, and put in three crosses.
The Liverpool star is still learning how to play in midfield. For now, he needs to be shown patience and allowed to make mistakes.
That is how Alexander-Arnold, who has been tipped to play in midfield for Real Madrid, is going to grow into the role and become better.
