‘Certainly’: Alan Shearer delivers his honest verdict on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s display for England tonight

Alan Shearer has delivered his verdict on Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold’s display for England against Serbia.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has often been left frustrated in the England set-up due to a lack of opportunities at right-back. But the Liverpool full-back was given the nod by Gareth Southgate for England’s Euro 2024 opener on Sunday evening.

Much has been made about Alexander-Arnold’s best position as many believe he will develop into a central midfielder.

Southgate seems to be of that opinion and opted to start the Englishman alongside Declan Rice in midfield tonight.

It was Alexander-Arnold’s fifth game as a central midfielder for his country and Alan Shearer was impressed with his display as England picked up a 1-0 win.

Shearer delivers Trent verdict as England beat Serbia

Alexander-Arnold was replaced by Conor Gallagher in the 69th minute following an all-action display in midfield.

Despite an early error that gifted Serbia a half-chance, the Liverpool man impressed and received praise from Shearer.

“He’s done well in there, Trent,” Shearer told BBC One as Alexander-Arnold left the pitch.

“Certainly in that first 35 minutes. Played some good passes. The timing of his tackling in front of the back four was really good as well.”
