Florida State never trailed in its convincing 7-3 win over Virginia on Sunday in the College World Series. It was a must-win for FSU, with the loser’s season coming to an end.
Virginia gave FSU its first run when right-handed pitcher Jay Woolfolk walked James Tibbs III with the bases loaded. Florida State didn’t wait long to strike again. In the fourth inning, FSU outfielder Jaime Ferrer crushed a solo home run over the left field fence to give the Seminoles a 2-0 lead.

Only one inning later, Ferrer put on an encore performance, smacking a three-run shot to left field. Earlier in the same inning, FSU sophomore Marco Dinges smacked a single to the right side of the field for a lone RBI. After five innings, the Seminoles held a 6-0 lead.
With another home run from Alex Lodise in the sixth inning, their lead increased to seven runs. Nonetheless, Virginia refused to lie down and accept defeat. Fueled by back-to-back hits from Henry Godbout and Casey Saucke, the Cavaliers cut their deficit to 7-2.
Not to be outdone, Virginia junior Anthony Stephan batted in a run in the eighth inning to cut further into FSU’s lead. However, the Cavaliers were unable to find offense again in the ninth inning and walked away with a 7-3 loss.
