Greg McElroy explains why Georgia is not getting enough offseason attention

While they did not accomplish the three-peat last season, Georgia hasn’t gone anywhere ahead of this fall. That leaves Greg McElroy wondering why no one is discussing the ‘Dawgs like he thinks they should be.

McElroy noted this about the Bulldogs during a recent episode of ‘Always College Football’. Considering all things, he doesn’t get why Georgia, who is all but certain to be in the top-five, if not the top-two, again coming into the season, isn’t in more conversations going into 2024.

“When we start with the Georgia Bulldogs, you’ll understand that I still think that, universally speaking, people have Georgia at worst as the number two in college football coming into the season. But how much time – seriously, I’ve looked back through my notes. I’ve looked back through our shows that we’ve done. We’ve talked way less, way less about the Georgia Bulldogs this year compared to where they were the year before and the year before that – way less,” said McElroy.

Based on the last three years, essentially no program, if any, have been as elite as Georgia. It’s just that, going into this next one, a few others have undergone some significant changes. In comparison, the Bulldogs have done very little with many expecting more of the same from them.

That detail has led to much of their absences that McElroy has noticed.

“Now, why is that? Well, partly because Alabama had a coaching change,” McElroy said. “The other team that would be right along side them in the mix at the top of the college football rankings this summer is Ohio State. Ohio State has had such a tremendous offseason with the additions that they made in the portal, by adding Chip Kelly to become their offensive coordinator. Ohio State has captured almost all of the attention there at the top when deciding between who’s one and who’s two.”

“Partly because Georgia is just kind of a plug-and-play – they’ve got so many pieces back. There’s not a ton of question marks, they don’t have a crazy quarterback competition going on right now,” continued McElroy. “You kind of know that Georgia is going to be in the mix.”

Again, just regarding the last three seasons, Georgia has been at the center of it all in college football. That comes with the resumé of winning 42 of 44 (.955), securing an SEC Championship, and earning consecutive national titles. They also have legitimate case that they could’ve won three straight had they made the playoff last year.

Still, the Bulldogs haven’t been the biggest headline of this offseason for whatever reason. With that said, McElroy swears to correct that with how he once again feels about them for next season.

“I think Georgia is kind of flying under the radar in a weird way, aren’t they?” McElroy thought. “For a team that is going to be ranked number two at worst, maybe number one going into the season? We just haven’t talked about them enough.”

“I can promise you that we’ll make right on that bet though. We’re going to talk about them a lot moving forward,” pledged McElroy. “We need to spend more time on a team that could very easily win their third national championship in four years and a team that is arguably the alpha-dog program of the sport – pun intended of course.”
