Walton Highway man in King’s Lynn court for growing cannabis was ‘thoroughly scared’ at thought of prison sentence

The idea of a prison sentence “thoroughly scared” a 28-year-old who was caught growing cannabis plants in a shed.

John Woodward, of Blunts Drove in Walton Highway, appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where he admitted producing the Class B drug.

Prosecutor Amir Khan said that police were patrolling the Walton Highway area on March 6 after reports of cannabis growers on a travelers site.

Police could hear the sound of fans coming from behind a shed door, and opened it to reveal nine cannabis plants being grown.

Woodward confessed to officers that the plants were his and that he was growing them for his own personal use.

In mitigation, George Sorrell said that Woodward has considered giving up his drug habit after hearing about the risk of going to prison.

“When I told him that growing cannabis can lead to a substantial prison sentence, he thought he’d review this activity as it thoroughly scared him. I think he was quite scared when I told him that,” the solicitor said.

Woodward was ordered to carry out a 12-month community order, which entails 80 hours of unpaid work.

He will also pay a victim surcharge of £114 and court costs of £85.
