How much money Celtic are set to bank as Giorgos Giakoumakis leaves Atlanta United

Celtic’s work in the transfer window has not even begun yet but already the club are set to land a tidy financial windfall.

Players will always come and go at the club but what Celtic have been extremely good at over the last decade or so is that when our top players leave, the club ensures they protect their investment by inserting a future sell-on clause.

Celtic are likely to benefit when players like Jeremie Frimpong and, before Arsenal set a price tag of £10m, Kieran Tierney move on to their next ventures.

We have also seen in the past where a sell-on clause inserted in Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk‘s contract meant that Celtic banked £6.2m when the Dutch superstar made his £75m move from Southampton to Anfield in 2018. [The Scotsman]

And now Celtic are set to benefit once more this summer.

Celtic cash in on Giorgos Giakoumakis’ Atlanta United exit

The big Greek striker left Celtic in February 2023 to join Atlanta United in a £4.3m deal. We discussed almost two weeks ago how Giakoumakis was set to leave the MLS side for Cruz Azul and now that deal has been done.

The international forward was a popular striker at Celtic amongst the fans due to his no-nonsense, physical side of the game that notched him 26 goals in 57 appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

And now that he has completed his next move to Mexican top-flight side Cruz Azul, Celtic are set to bank a cool £900,000 after the Daily Record reported that a 10% sell-on clause meant that Giakoumakis’ £7.3m move earned the Parkhead club close to £1m.

Giakoumakis’ goal-scoring record for the MLS side was just as impressive as his Parkhead numbers.

24 goals in 43 appearances clearly caught the eye of the Mexican side and they will be hoping that the former Celtic star will help fire them to their first title since 2021 after finishing as runners-up last season.
