East Barnwell Health Centre GPs in Cambridge hand back contract and will leave practice

Doctors at East Barnwell Health Centre have handed back their contract and will leave the practice in October this year.

The four GPs say they can no longer keep up with the costs of running the surgery.

However, the surgery will not close. The local Integrated Care System is now in the process of looking for an alternative provider to run the practice.

In a statement, the doctors said it was “with great sadness that the four partners, Dr Harmer, Dr Boualem, Dr Macnair and Dr Mellanby have made the decision to hand back their contract. This means that from the 10th October 2024, these partners will no longer be responsible for running East Barnwell Health Centre.”

They blamed “increasing financial challenges” stemming from “an exponential rise in the service charges required to work out of our current NHS Property Service-owned building; inadequate local health funding to meet the needs of our patients; and a national contract funding increase well below inflation”.

They added: “We have had many meetings over several years with the local NHS system leaders and worked very hard to try to achieve a solution to guarantee our viability going forward. We are very proud of all our team at the surgery who have continued to work in the practice despite increasingly difficult circumstances.”

A spokesperson for NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough told the Cambridge Independent: “Access to GP services is vital for local communities. That’s why we have already started work to identify a new provider of these services at East Barnwell Health Centre, so that local people can continue to get good quality care from their local surgery now and in the future.

“We would like to reassure patients that they can continue to access services in the same way as they always have during this time, and we will work alongside community groups to ensure that feedback from patients at the surgery is taken into account.”
