Aston Villa receive a major blow in their hunt for Matty Cash’s replacement

Aston Villa have received a potential big blow in their search for a new full-back as they look to replace Matty Cash.

The transfer window is starting to heat up around Villa Park. In recent weeks, multiple players have been linked to and from the club as Unai Emery looks to shape his squad for the 2024/25 campaign.

The biggest rumour has been Douglas Luiz’s proposed move to Juventus with Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior believed to be coming the other way.

Another Villa first-teamer who has regularly been linked away is Cash. The Polish full-back is believed to be wanted by AC Milan who could purchase the 26-year-old for £20 million.

However, if Cash does leave, the club have now received a major blow for his potential replacement after one Villa target claimed he was happy to stay at his club.

Villa have been linked to plenty of targets throughout the summer. While some have been eye-catching names, others may have gone under the radar such as Trai Hume.

The 22-year-old full-back was one of the Black Cats’ best players throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

This resulted in multiple links to Premier League sides, including Villa, who were believed to be ‘monitoring his progress’.

However, any potential move this window has taken a blow after Hume insisted that he is currently happy to stay at Sunderland.

He told Sunday Life Sport: “I think I could play in the Premier League. You have to keep yourself at a high standard and you want to push yourself as much as you can.

“That’s the level I want to get to but I’m happy enough at Sunderland and happy where I’m at and I’m really enjoying my football. If a move happens, it happens and if it doesn’t I’m happy to play for Sunderland.”

While the quotes do suggest that Hume is in no rush to leave Sunderland, the full-back has also left the door open to a potential move.

The 22-year-old clearly believes that he can take the step up into the top-flight. However, he is not going to push for the move.

While this could increase the price Villa may need to pay for the Northern Irish defender, it does not mean that he would reject the move.

The temptation of Champions League football would surely be a more intriguing move over another year of the Championship. Emery has also proved that he can develop second-tier players into Premier League stars in a very quick fashion, as seen with Morgan Rogers.

With plenty of the transfer window left, things could easily develop in Villa’s favour over the coming months.
