Aston Villa facing late PSR blow as one bizarre reason now holds up vital player exit

Aston Villa are now facing a race against time to offload one player who is crucial to aiding PSR concerns.

Unai Emery and Monchi are close to offloading Douglas Luiz to Juventus as Aston Villa scramble to avoid a PSR breach before June 30th.

The Brazilian looks set to move to Turin as part of a swap deal that will see Samuel Iling-Junior and Weston McKennie arrive at Villa Park.

While offloading Luiz will assist Villa’s mission of easing PSR concerns, another exit will be critical to aiding the finances although, talks have stalled for one strange reason.

Aston Villa are still waiting for Philippe Coutinho to exit as Vasco da Gama talks stall

Jhon Duran’s future has also been speculated ahead of the June 30th deadline however, it could be a forgotten player whose exit could be most impactful.

Philippe Coutinho’s departure will be fundamental to easing PSR concerns due to his wages as he prepares to return from a loan spell at Al-Duhail.

The 32-year-old is in talks to return to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama in Brazil however, talks have slowed for one bizarre reason.

According to Brazilian outlet O Dia, Coutinho has requested that Vasco sign two of his friends, Basaksehir midfielder Josef de Souza and free agent Alex Teixeira.

It’s said that the Villa outsider hopes the duo can be signed alongside him to improve the quality of Vasco’s squad, as the club currently sit 15th in the Brazilian Serie A.

That being said, it’s not all bad news as the club’s president Pedrinho confirmed that he had met with Coutinho’s representatives, reassuring that ‘negotiation continues’.

Villa must offload Coutinho fast this summer

As detailed last week by The Athletic, getting the former Liverpool sensation off the wage books will be crucial for Villa to improve their PSR situation.

As per Capology, Coutinho is one of Villa’s top earners, picking up a salary of £125k-a-week.

The Brazilian has not featured for Emery’s side since August 2023, with the end in sight for his time in England after a severe decline from his highs at Liverpool.

Getting Coutinho off the wage bill will ease Villa’s PSR concerns, in what should be considered an easy method of tidying up the books however, the current stall is proving to make the situation more complicated.

Only time will tell if Villa can offload the out-of-favour forward before June 30th, with his bizarre request to Vasco something rarely seen in football.
