'A lot of options': Derby County are now 'close' to making their first summer signings - Alan Nixon

Derby County are reportedly closing in on their first ‘couple’ of signings of the summer.

Derby County have parted ways with six players on free transfers this month, but are yet to make their first signing since winning promotion.

The Rams are desperately light in a number of positions, with Dwight Gayle, Tyreece John-Jules Martyn Waghorn’s exits leaving them to rely on Conor Washington and James Collins.

The club shocked supporters when they offloaded Joe Wildsmith too, with the goalkeeper having won the League One Golden Glove just weeks before his departure was confirmed.

Meanwhile, Derby are desperate to bolster their midfield and are already looking to swoop for Ebou Adams permanently, while recent reports have claimed they are interested in Brighton’s Marc Leonard.

Derby County ‘close’ to new signings

It is unclear where the club’s priorities lay, however it now looks like they could be about to make their first signings of the summer.

Journalist Alan Nixon wrote on X: “Have a lot of options. Need to close a couple of deals.”

Who could the Rams be about to sign?

There is no indication on who Derby are closing in on, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it was Adams.

The midfielder was ‘immense’ last season and reports claimed that Paul Warne had ‘been trying for weeks‘ to bring him back to the club.

With his contract at Cardiff expiring next summer, the Welsh outfit could look to make a decent fee to avoid losing him for free in a year’s time.

Adams has previously admitted to enjoying his time in the Midlands, so if a fee can be agreed with Cardiff then it could be smooth sailing to bring him back to Pride Park permanently.

Fans will also hope they are closing in on a new striker too, though there hasn’t been much talk of many targets in this area.

Championship clubs are always desperately fighting over goalscorers in the summer window and Derby will have to act fast if they want to avoid missing out, or having to pay the big bucks to bring someone in.

If the Rams are forced to head into the campaign without dramatically strengthening their attack then there is no doubt that a relegation scrap will be upon the horizon.
