One killed, eight injured in Czech army training ground blast

One soldier died and seven other soldiers as well as one civilian were injured on Monday when ammunition exploded at a military training ground in the Czech Republic.

All of the casualties were members of the Czech army's logistics centre for ammunition supply based in Týniště nad Orlicí, 130 kilometres east of Prague, the defence ministry said.

The incident occurred at the Libavá training ground near the eastern town of Olomouc, where the injured were treated at local hospitals.

It was initially unclear what type of ammunition detonated. The military police began an investigation into the cause of the accident.

The Libavá facility covers an area of around 235 square kilometres. The majority of it is inaccessible to the public. Activity on the site has recently increased significantly.

This year, the Czech army will train around 4,000 Ukrainian soldiers at Libavá and other grounds for active duty against Russian forces that invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
