West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback Garrett Greene enters the 2024 season as a more under-the-radar quarterback in the Big 12. However, he also looks like he could be one of the biggest names at the position by the end of the season.

Ahead of the season, On3’s Clark Brooks appeared on Andy Staples On3 to break down the strengths and weaknesses of Greene’s game going into 2024.

“One of the highest percentage of plays outside the pocket,” Clark Brooks said. “Now, some of that was from necessity. He’s under six feet tall. You can’t necessarily see the field well with all those big bodies in front. So, naturally, despite Neal Brown being of the Air Raid, classic Air Raid, Hal Mumme disciple, literally at Kentucky…well, that was not the case with Garrett Greene. He had the highest makeup of attempts over 10 yards downfield in our impact study. 46 percent. That’s remarkable.”

In 2023, Garrett Greene threw for 8.7 yards per attempt, which was 21st in the country among qualified passers. That led to him throwing for 2,406 yards and 16 touchdowns to only four interceptions.

“Again, the balls tend to travel both inside the pocket and outside the pocket. So, dynamic playmaker. A little volatile in terms of down-to-down consistency. A lot of Jalen Milroe just because of the vertical style of play, but if you’re looking for an underrated playmaker, look no further than the guy in Morgantown.”

Another key aspect of Garrett Greene’s game is his athleticism, which led to him rushing for 772 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023. It’s that athleticism that helps him be a dynamic quarterback for West Virginia.

“Just how the style of play is, used to be, we can recognize pre-snap, put less pressure on the guys up front and get the ball out,” Brooks said.

“But now you don’t have to worry about a guy taking extra beats because he’s so fantastic with the ball in his hands. So, PFF, their pressure to sack ration, his clip was under five percent. So, only five percent of pressures resulted in a sack last year. Lowest in the nation. A dynamic way to articulate how much of a playmaker he is, both inside and outside of structure. Negating losses and providing downfield splash plays.”

Garrett Greene is going into his fifth season in 2024. With that, he’s going to try and take a step forward and help West Virginia to compete for a Big 12 title.
