35 tons of cocaine seized in months-long German investigation

Germany has made its largest ever seizure of cocaine as part of a criminal investigation, after a tip-off from the Colombian authorities.

In total, more than 35 tons of cocaine were involved in the haul from several locations, investigators announced in the western city of Dusseldorf on Monday.

The drugs had been hidden in shipping containers among crates of fruit and other goods.

Investigators put the street value of the drugs at €2.6 billion ($2.79 billion).

Drug investigators seized almost 25 tons of cocaine in the port of Hamburg last year, another 8 tons in Rotterdam and almost 3 tons in Ecuador.

Eight suspects aged between 30 and 54 are believed to have organized the shipments. A businessman from North Rhine Westphalia set up 100 fake companies to make the transports appear legal, the investigators said.

Months of investigations were followed by searches in seven federal states and seven arrests.
