Israel reports death of Hezbollah artillery chief in Lebanon

The Israeli military said on Monday that it killed a high-ranking artilleryman of the Shiite Hezbollah militia in a targeted airstrike in southern Lebanon.

Mohammad Mustafa Ayoub is said to have been a key figure in the rocket division of the Nasser unit in southern Lebanon.

He allegedly planned and carried out attacks against Israeli civilians and communities in the north of the country.

Hezbollah confirmed the killing of one of its fighters by Israel on Monday but gave no further details about his identity.

The Nasser Unit is one of three Hezbollah troop units in southern Lebanon. On Wednesday, Israel killed the commander of this unit, Talib Abdallah, in a targeted air strike. The Shiite militia then fired 200 rockets and other projectiles at Israel.

Since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, there have been daily clashes between the Israeli army, Hezbollah and allied groups in the border area between Israel and Lebanon.

There have been numerous casualties on both sides. The mutual shelling caused heavy destruction in villages on either side of the border. Around 150,000 people were evacuated or left the conflict zone.
