Crews is now only one step away from making his Major League Baseball debut.

Dylan Crews was selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft following an incredible career and season at LSU. He hit .426 with a .567 on-base percentage in 2023, helping the Tigers win the national championship. Crews added 18 home runs, 70 RBIs and scored 100 runs. He was named the Golden Spikes Award winner.

The 22-year-old has been playing for the Harrisburg Senators — the Nationals Double-A team — throughout the 2024 season. He is hitting .274 with five home runs and 38 RBIs on the year. Crews has played particularly well lately, hitting .298 in May and .283 in June.

Paul Skenes starring with Pittsburgh Pirates

While Dylan Crews is continuing to work his way towards Major League Baseball, his former LSU teammate Paul Skenes is already performing at an elite level with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Skenes was promoted to Pittsburgh in May and has been excellent thus far.

Entering Monday’s game against the Reds, Skenes is 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA. The righty has 46 strikeouts across 33 1/3 innings pitched over his six starts. Skenes also has a WHIP of 0.96.

Ahead of last year’s draft, LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson spoke about both Skenes and Dylan Crews and what special players they are. Skenes went No. 1 overall to the Pirates, with Crews going No. 2 overall to the Nationals.

“It’ll be pretty special,” Johnson said of seeing his two stars being selected. “Obviously, it’s always about the team. But I have a different view maybe on things. Like, obviously, we want to win and we want to win championships. But how we do that is really important to me and you do that through development.

“To see Dylan and Paul, or Paul and Dylan, go as the first two picks in the draft? It’s something that I’m really proud of them for. They’re unbelievable players and very worthy of being selected up there. And they’re Hall of Fame people. Whatever team gets them is going to have a different organization immediately. Not just because of the talent they’re adding but the person they’re adding.”
