It wasn’t the setting he was hoping for, but Kentucky baseball’s Ryan Nicholson tied a program record during Monday night’s College World Series defeat.

In the bottom of the ninth inning against the Texas A&M Aggies with the wind in his face, Nicholson belted his 23rd home run of the season over the right field wall. It was his second dinger of the CWS, but unfortunately, it only cut Texas A&M’s lead down to four, 5-1, which is how the game would ultimately end.

Nicholson is now in a four-way tie for most home runs in program history. The Louisville native joins an elusive club that also features John Wilson (1999), Jeff Abbott (1994), and AJ Reed (2014).

Nicholson, a 6-foot-4 graduate transfer from Cincinnati, finished his night 2-4 at the plate. In addition to his 23rd homer of the season, he also broke up Texas A&M’s no-hit bid in the seventh inning with a single to right field.

Kentucky (46-15) now has to win on Tuesday in order to stay alive. The Bat Cats will take on Florida at 7:00 p.m. EST on ESPN with its season on the line. Nicholson will have a chance to break the school record against the Gators with one more home run.
