The Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals, which means former Alabama men’s basketball player JD Davison, now in Year 2 as a pro, is an NBA champion.

Alabama head coach Nate Oats was in attendance on Monday night.

Davison, a second-round pick by the Celtics in 2022, appeared in eight games for Boston this season and averaged 2.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 41.7 percent from the field. Davison last saw game action for the Celtics in mid-April.

The former Crimson Tide standout did, however, shine for Boston’s G League team, the Maine Celtics. Davison averaged 21.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game while shooting 45.1 percent from the floor. Davison started all 28 of the games that he played in.

As a freshman at Alabama in 2021-22, Davison saw action in all 33 games, making six starts. He earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team, becoming the sixth straight UA player to earn the accolade, and finished the season leading the team with 4.3 assists per game, while ranking second in steals (1.0 spg), third in rebounding (4.8 rpg) and fourth in scoring (8.5 ppg).

Davison ranked seventh in the SEC in total assists (143) and assists per game and had 13 games where he scored double figures as well as a team-leading 18 times that he led the UA in assists during a contest. He was twice recognized as the SEC Freshman of the Week.

A unanimous 5-star recruit out of Letohatchee, Alabama, Davison was rated as the No. 1 player in the state of Alabama, the No. 1 point guard in the nation and the No. 11 overall player in the 2021 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings, before committing to the Crimson Tide.
