Fabrizio Romano says the race for Liverpool to sign £40m forward is really heating up

Liverpool are still yet to make any concrete moves during the summer transfer window.

The Reds have so far been linked with a whole host of players to give them a boost in next season’s Premier League title race.

However, while rumours over a move for Leny Yoro have heated up, for example, there doesn’t appear to be anything especially imminent.

As Arne Slot returns from holiday and starts work at the AXA Training Centre, that could now start to change, though.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, things could start to move quickly in a deal for a player who Liverpool have been tracking for a long while.

Crysencio Summerville set for ‘important’ talks

As Liverpool look at ways to improve their first-team squad they are reportedly keen to bring in a new attacking player.

There have been a stack of forwards linked with moves to Anfield, with the latest reports suggesting Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo could be an option.

Another player to have been mentioned in connection with Liverpool a quite many times has been Leeds United forward Crysencio Summerville.

While interest in Summerville is said to have been ‘concrete‘ though, nothing has yet fully materialised. But according to transfer expert Romano, a move from Premier League rivals Brighton for the 22-year-old is set to kick things into action.

“It’s a concrete possibility,” the journalist told The Debrief Podcast when asked about interest from the Seagulls. “Brighton are trying to move fast. What I’m hearing is that Brighton made contact in the recent hours to explore the possibility to attack the situation for Crysencio Summerville, there are talks ongoing.”

“There is also interest from two big clubs – Chelsea and Liverpool – both of them had some contacts in the recent months I would say,” Romano adds. “They’ve been tracking him for months. There is still a big, big race ongoing but Brighton want to try.

“The correct fee will be around £35-40m at the end of the story for Summerville. It’s also going to be important the payment terms, how many years to pay the fee and all these kinds of details will be important. But, yes, I understand they hope to get a deal done for something close to £35-40m.

“I think the next days will be important to see how these contacts will go. If Brighton will not be able to reach an agreement in the next two, three weeks, maybe these big clubs could appear and it could be complicated to convince the player. Let’s see what’s going to happen but for sure Brighton are strong on this one.”

Should Liverpool rival Brighton for Summerville?

There’s little question that Summerville is a talented player. The Dutchman scored 19 goals on his way to winning the Championship Player of the Season award in 2023/24.

At 22, Summerville has plenty of scope to get even better and you can understand why that would appeal to Liverpool.

However, it is also true that the jump from the second division to playing for the Reds is a very big one.

From Liverpool’s point of view, perhaps it would be more prudent to see how Summerville gets on making the leap to Brighton first of all.

If he does well at the Amex, maybe the Reds can retain an interest for further down the line. The cost would obviously increase massively by that point, but they’d be getting more of a sure thing.

Let’s see how the next days and weeks go and whether Liverpool decide they need to jump in right now.
