Gary Neville shares what he really thinks Trent Alexander-Arnold’s best position is for Liverpool and England

Liverpool really do have a big decision to make regarding which position to play Trent Alexander-Arnold next season.

The 25-year-old has played at right-back for the majority of his career, but has often adopted an inverted full-back role at Anfield.

That has allowed him to venture into midfield, a position that he now regularly occupies under Gareth Southgate for England.

The Liverpool ace started and played almost 70 minutes there for the Three Lions in their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia.

His display has simply caused more debate around his best position on the pitch, with the performance certainly dividing opinion.

It is, of course, Southgate that will have the final say, with the manager needing to make a decision for the next meeting with Denmark.

But it hasn’t stopped Gary Neville from weighing in on the debate, with the Sky Sports pundit now sharing his thoughts on where Alexander-Arnold can shine brightest.

“We know he can do it when he moves into midfield from right-back and then can deliver those crosses and passes,” Neville told Sky Sports. “There were times when he found himself with his back to play and that is a different story.

“I don’t really want to focus on him being a problem in there. It was the balance of the entire midfield and I include Declan Rice in that as well – and what England need to have in there to be able to move forward in this tournament.

“All eyes will be on Trent Alexander-Arnold. His best position is right-back and having the ability to move forward on that side or coming inside and playing that quarter-back role.

“It doesn’t look like we’re going to do that, it looks like we’re going to stick with Kyle Walker which is absolutely the right decision.

“Gareth will know he’s got an issue with these talented players and how he gets them all into the team – and most importantly with the right balance.”

What will Gareth Southgate do with Trent Alexander-Arnold?

Plenty of interested parties have been having their say following England’s opening win, with Jude Bellingham the goalscorer in the 1-0 victory.

He was part of that midfield alongside Rice and Alexander-Arnold, with the Real Madrid and Arsenal stars clearly happy with their new man in the middle given how they reacted to his social media post after the win.

Jamie O’Hara, however, opted to go down a different route, with the talkSPORT pundit tearing into the Liverpool man following his performance in Germany.

All eyes are now on Southgate, who may just alter his starting XI in terms of what they will be coming up against during their meeting with Denmark.

Different midfielders can carry out different roles to varying degrees of success, and the man in the dugout will definitely need to consider that.

The likes of Premier League stars Christian Eriksen and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are likely to form part of the Danish midfield, having played there in their 1-1 draw with Slovenia.
