‘Looking to sign’: Sunderland now ‘in talks’ with promotion-winner who'll cost nothing - Alan Nixon

Sunderland could be set to make their first signing of the summer after entering ‘talks’ with a free-agent.

Sunderland‘s summer transfer business has been rather non-existent as they await a new manager.

The transfer window opened last week, but the Black Cats have been linked with very few players as they prioritise bringing in a new head coach first.

However, it now looks like they are ready to bring in a Championship free-agent before they even bring in Michael Beale’s replacement.

Sunderland closing in on free-agent signing

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Sunderland are now ‘in talks’ to sign goalkeeper Simon Moore.

He wrote on his Patreon: “Managerless Sunderland are in talks with experienced Coventry keeper Simon Moore.

“The Black Cats are looking to sign free agent Moore, 34, as cover for Anthony Patterson.”

Moore came up through non-league before joining Brentford in 2009, where he helped them reach the Football League Trophy final and the League One play-off final.

He has since played for Cardiff City, Bristol City and Sheffield United, winning the League One title and being named in the PFA Team of the Year with the latter in 2016-17.

He has been at Coventry City since 2021, having made 41 appearances in his first season with the club.

However, he has only managed three appearances since the 2021-22 season and is now set to be released this summer.

Patterson’s current back-up at Sunderland is Nathan Bishop, whose only senior football has come with Southend United and Mansfield Town.

Meanwhile, Alex Bass could leave permanently after impressing during his loan spell at AFC Wimbledon.

Anthony Patterson needs a mentor

While it is still unclear whether Patterson will stay at Sunderland this summer, he desperately needs an experienced head around to help him develop.

The 24-year-old is clearly very talented, but like most of the squad, doesn’t have someone to look up to for guidance.

The goalkeeping department definitely needs an older and a younger figure, but Sunderland’s lack of presence in the dressing room there may well hinder Patterson’s progression.

Manchester United have Tom Heaton in their ranks, while Scott Carson has recently signed a new contract at Man City.

Neither player will play in the Premier League, but offer useful leadership and experience to the younger ones.
