Report: Tottenham tried to tempt 'special' Leeds player to join them in 2023, now they want him again

Tottenham Hotspur could look to reignite their interest in one of Leeds United’s top young talents this summer.

The Whites have a vast array of youngsters who are wanted by clubs in the Premier League after their failure to win promotion from the Championship last season.

Those behind-the-scenes at Leeds have acknowledged the fact at least one key sale will be needed in order to comply with PSR, though Red Bull’s lucrative investment has put them in a better position.

At this stage, Championship POTS Crysencio Summerville looks the most likely to depart this summer, with those at Leeds having reportedly showed no real determination to keep him.

That said, Leeds will not be bullied into selling on the cheap and a price tag in excess of £30 million has been set, with Brighton the first club to open talks over a deal.

Update shared on Tottenham interest in Leeds star Archie Gray

While Leeds’ financial position is not anywhere near as bad as has been made out, Summerville’s likely sale is not just going to stop interest in their other players.

In Willy Gnonto, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter, Leeds have some really bright young talent on their books who are bound to attract interest over the course of the next two-and-a-half-months.

And Gray is certainly someone who features heavily on a lot of side’s shortlists following his debut campaign in the first team at his boyhood club.

According to the Athletic, Tottenham are very much one of the sides interested in signing him this summer, having scouted him ‘extensively’ in recent years.

It is said Spurs even made an offer to tempt the ‘special‘ Gray to North London back in 2023 just before he put pen-to-paper on his first professional deal at Leeds.

Gray was then handed a more longer term deal earlier this year which puts Leeds in a good position when it comes to trying to keep him.

Chairman Paraag Marathe could not commit either way when asked about Gray earlier this month, but the 18-year-old’s desire to stay, as well as Summerville’s impending exit, puts Leeds in a good position.

What would it take for Leeds to sell Gray?

As mentioned, Leeds are in a strong position when it comes to keeping Gray due to the investment from Red Bull, and the probable big money sale of Summerville.

Given that he has also only recently signed a new deal, in no way will be Gray be leaving on the cheap this summer.

It is said that it would take a ‘mammoth’ proposal for Leeds to even consider listening to offers for Gray, though no exact figure has yet been placed on his head.

From an outsider’s perspective, anything less than £50 million would not be enough considering what he could be worth if Leeds do reach the Premier League.
