Report: £890m F1 team set to deliver ‘most important’ update in Spain that could be worth 2.5-tenths per lap

The Spanish Grand Prix has always had a reputation for being the race where teams would deliver their first major updates of the season.

However, that was back when it was in the first four or five races on the calendar, whereas now teams are heading to their tenth race weekend of the season.

That doesn’t mean manufacturers still aren’t targeting bringing some major upgrades to the track to try and gain an advantage over their rivals.

The likes of McLaren and Mercedes have shown in recent races just how important a raft of updates can be to the overall performance of the car with both teams arguably challenging for pole positions and potentially race wins this weekend.

A report from Formu1a.uno has suggested that a team slightly further down the grid are hoping to make a big step forward in Spain.

They suggest that Visa Cash App RB are heading to the Spanish Grand Prix with their ‘most important’ update of the season.

If it meets the £890m team’s expectations, it could save them a huge amount of time each lap.

Visa Cash App RB delivering their ‘most important’ update at the Spanish Grand Prix

It’s been a really positive season for Red Bull’s sister team after their rebrand over the winter.

AlphaTauri were 8 in the Constructors’ Championship last year but the new V-CARB team have leapfrogged Williams and Alpine this season.

Daniel Ricciardo’s return to Formula 1 hasn’t quite gone to plan but his performance in Canada was very positive.

However, it’s his teammate Yuki Tsunoda who has set tongues wagging up and down the paddock.

The Japanese driver currently sits in the top ten of the Drivers’ Championship above Lance Stroll and is regularly reaching Q3 in qualifying.

He would have been disappointed to have only started 8 in Montreal, especially as Ricciardo put his car on the third row of the grid.

RB will hope that the update they’re bringing to the Spanish Grand Prix can firmly put them in the midfield and extend the gap over the bottom four teams in the paddock.

They might have Aston Martin worrying about their position in the championship if things all go to plan.

The report from Formu1a.uno provides more details on the expectations within RB for their latest round of updates.

They delivered their first upgrade package in Miami where Ricciardo finished fourth in the Sprint Race and Tsunoda secured five points across both races.

However, ‘authoritative sources’ have suggested that the update coming to the Spanish Grand Prix will be the ‘most important’ of the season for RB.

They suggest that if everything goes to plan, the updates could be worth ‘up to 2.5-tenths’ on tracks like Barcelona and Silverstone.

If RB had gained that much time in Canada in qualifying, Tsunoda would have jumped up to 6 while Ricciardo would have been on pole position.

That seems incredibly unlikely, especially with other teams also expected to take steps forward this weekend. However, RB have placed themselves very well this season and will be hoping they can close in on Aston Martin by the end of the upcoming triple header.
