Three Brighton players Leeds United should ask for as talks begin over Crysencio Summerville deal - opinion

Brighton & Hove Albion have reportedly become the first club to open talks with Leeds United over a deal for Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville is not short of interest this summer with an abundance of Premier League clubs having been linked with moves for the 22-year-old, who is widely expected to depart Elland Road.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Crystal Palace are among the other sides who have been mentioned as potential destinations, but it is the Seagulls who have made the first move.

An asking price of around £30 million has been set by Leeds but with the ever-growing interest in his services, that could help drive that figure up even more.

Once he does eventually move on as expected, Leeds are going to have to bring in some real quality to replace the 19 goals and nine assists he got last season.

With that in mind, Brighton may not be the worst side for Leeds to sell to, given the amount of young quality they have in their squad. Here is a look at three they should ask for in return during the talks.

Carl Rushworth

Starting from the back, Leeds could also be in need of a new goalkeeper depending on the future of Illan Meslier.

In all honesty, a departure for Meslier this summer feels like the best solution for all parties after another shaky end to the season. Given he was bought for just £5 million, he is also someone who could generate a profit.

If he was to depart, not only would Rushworth be a suitable replacement, but he would also be an immediate upgrade.

With a goals prevented tally of -4.5, Meslier was statistically one of the worst shotstoppers in the Championship last season. Rushworth, meanwhile, was among the best at four having spent the year on loan at Swansea City.

In Bart Verbruggen and Jason Steele, Brighton already have two first-team goalkeepers who are currently ahead of him in the pecking order. Leeds should try take advantage.

Adam Webster

Central defence is also an area Leeds will need to seriously strengthen in and so Adam Webster could be a decent option for Daniel Farke, as long as it doesn’t have much of an impact on the fee the Whites receive.

With Premier League interest growing in former loanee Joe Rodon, Leeds may seriously have to start looking at alternative targets for that right centre-back role.

Charlie Cresswell has also been linked with a move away, while Liam Cooper has not yet signed a new deal. As such, experience, depth and quality will need adding at centre-back.

Webster is certainly someone who could add all three of those things, with 124 Premier League appearances for Brighton under his belt.

However, he did find game time harder to come by last season with Lewis Dunk, Jan Paul van Hecke and Igor all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Having played under both Graham Potter and Roberto de Zerbi, Webster is clearly comfortable on the ball, making him an ideal candidate to potentially come in and replace Rodon.

Facundo Buonanotte

Moving further up the field and more someone who could actually come in to replace Summerville’s skillset is Argentine attacking midfielder Facundo Buonanotte.

Buonanotte was someone Leeds were actually linked with almost 12 months ago but despite reported talks, a deal never materialised and he stayed at Brighton.

Still only 19, Buonanotte already has 50 appearances under his belt for the Seagulls but a lot of them have been from the bench. A potential loan spell where he is starting week in, week out could be ideal for his development.

Brighton already have a lot of competition for places in attack and if they were to add Summerville to those options, Buonanotte may find game time harder to come by.

He can both as a central attacking midfielder and right-winger, and given he is left-footed, he would certainly bring a different type of profile to Leeds’ set of attacking options.
