Report: Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney plot ambitious Wrexham move for 'towering' 37-cap title-winner

Wrexham’s latest ambitious move is seeing them target a League One title-winner with 37 caps for his country.

The word ‘ambition’ has been heavily associated with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ time at Wrexham.

In the National League, they were able to capture goal machine Paul Mullin from third-tier side Cambridge United.

A year later in 2022, the Reds signed a League One promotion winner Elliot Lee on a free transfer.

Then, following their record-breaking title win in the National League, Wrexham’s ambition reached new heights as they signed former Premier League players Steven Fletcher and James McClean.

This summer is expected to follow a similar trend as Phil Parkinson plots a move for a League One title winner.

Wrexham plot ambitious move for Portsmouth midfielder Joe Morrell

According to Portsmouth News, Wrexham are plotting a move for Pompey midfielder Joe Morrell, who is currently available on a free transfer.

Morrell – a 37-cap Wales international – played 27 times in the third tier last term as John Mousinho’s men clinched the title ahead of Derby County.

Portsmouth’s surprise decision not to take their option up on the midfielder has opened up the door for other teams to take advantage, with Wrexham said to be one of his ‘admirers’.

The Welsh midfield star has been at the club since signing from Luton Town in the summer of 2021, with the 27-year-old racking up 105 appearances, scoring once and providing 10 assists.

In terms of midfield profile, Morrell is exactly what they need in their engine room to provide competition for the likes of Lee, Andy Cannon and McClean.

Joe Morrell is a great alternative to Marc Leonard

Wrexham have targeted Marc Leonard from Brighton for the past few weeks, although the midfielder has several admirers, with six clubs reportedly tabling bids.

The chances of Wrexham landing the 22-year-old over multiple Championship clubs look incredibly slim, so plotting a move for Morrell is a brilliant alternative.

As a fully-fledged Welsh international, Morrell has played regularly on the European stage and complimented that with success for his club, achieving promotion to the second tier last term.

In terms of what he would bring to Wrexham, the Portsmouth man can do the job of George Evans, sitting in front of the back three and winning possession back for his team, or be the driving force from midfield like Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee.

Previously described as a ‘towering’ presence on the pitch, Morrell backed up that claim with some impressive defensive metrics, ranking second in the Pompey squad for tackles won per game (2.4) and third for interceptions (1.1).

The Welshman is also efficient at keeping the ball in tight spaces, boasting an 86% pass completion in 2023/24.

For McElhenney and Reynolds to land Morrell on a free transfer would be an incredible coup and one that would show their ambition of fighting for promotion.
