'Free to sign': Spanish journalist claims former Sunderland target has been released by LaLiga outfit

One of Sunderland’s January targets has now been released by a LaLiga club.

Sunderland were linked with a number of strikers last season as they looked to bolster their firing line, but failed to do so.

They are currently heading into the new campaign with the same crop that disappointed, but without Mason Burstow following his return to Chelsea.

While Sunderland aren’t expected to make any big signings until they appoint a new manager, they will be under increasing pressure to fill that void up front sooner rather than later.

The Black Cats could be boosted if they wish to revive their interest in one of their former targets though.

Musa Drammeh is ‘free to sign for another club’

According to solofichajes123, Sevilla haven’t offered Musa Drammeh a new contract and he is now free to leave the club.

They wrote on X: “The 22-year-old Gambian striker Musa Drammeh is free to sign for another club for free after standing out in the Sevilla reserve team this season (10 goals and 3 assists).

“The Sevilla club has not offered him a renewal and has offers from abroad.”

Drammeh joined Sevilla in January 2022 and has really impressed with the reserves, though has mostly been deployed as a right winger this season.

The 22-year-old looked to be knocking on the door of the first-team in January, with Sunderland a number of other clubs failing in their pursuit to land him.

However, Drammeh is now set to leave on a free transfer and may be in the back of Sunderland’s mind.

Do Sunderland need the Sevilla reserve star?

Sunderland need new attackers all along their frontline and Drammeh may well be an exciting player, but his lack of senior football is an issue that the club have already had troubles with elsewhere.

The likes of Jewison Bennette, Abdoullah Ba, Luis Hemir and Eliezer Mayenda have all been punished for that this season, so it begs the question as to why the Black Cats would be prepared to make that mistake again.

The only correct way to handle it would be to bring him in and sell or loan out the other players, but it’s still a huge risk assuming that Drammeh wouldn’t need a significant amount of time to settle in like the rest of the them.

It’s a deal that the club will surely look at, but certainly not one that they need to do.
