Released Wrexham favourite who Parkinson hailed as 'immense' completes transfer to League Two side

The latest player to leave Wrexham at the end of the season has just completed a transfer to a League Two side.

Wrexham required a clear-out after winning promotion to League One.

Long-serving players such as Ben Tozer, Aaron Hayden and Luke Young were all released and told to find another club.

Hayden has since completed a move to Carlisle United, Tozer has dropped back down to the National League with Forest Green Rovers and Young has now found his next club.

Luke Young completes move to Cheltenham Town

The hardest goodbye Wrexham arguably had to say this summer was to Young, who spent an incredible six years at the club, captaining the Reds to consecutive promotions.

A mainstay in Phil Parkinson’s starting XI throughout his tenure, the 31-year-old amassed over 250 appearances and was a real presence on and off the pitch.

Dubbed “immense” for his professionalism last term as he saw his game time slashed, Young didn’t let playing fewer games impact his confidence and he impressed in most matches he featured.

Sadly, Parkinson decided to let him go as he wanted him to play a starring role elsewhere, something he wasn’t guaranteed at Wrexham.

The midfield maestro claimed that made him have ‘even more respect’ for his manager last week, with the Englishman since completing a move to League Two outfit Cheltenham Town.

The Robins were relegated from League One last term after finishing 21st and in their bid to bounce straight back, have significantly strengthened their midfield.

Luke Young is an astute signing for Cheltenham

Young only started 12 times for Wrexham in the fourth tier last season however, you only have to look at the competition he was against to understand why.

At the base of midfield, he had to try to dislodge former Championship player George Evans for a place in the side while in the two advanced roles, occupied by Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee, getting picked ahead of that duo was a near-impossible task.

Upon arriving at Cheltenham, though, competition for places in their starting XI will be far less than what he had to contend with in Wales and the deep-lying playmaker will be able to showcase his class.

Young posted some impressive metrics for the Reds in 2023/24, including an 82% pass completion, 2.6 balls recovered per game and three big chances created, as per Sofascore.

Not only that but his role as a captain and a leader for the younger players such as Arthur Okonkwo and Max Cleworth was a key ingredient in their promotion push.

Young left Wrexham on a high by sealing a second promotion in as many years – he’ll be looking to make it a third at Cheltenham.
