Nevada senator rips JD Vance over 'fake problem' claim: 'Shame on him'

On Friday, June 14, the U.S. Supreme Court drew scathing and widespread criticism from Democrats after ruling, 6-3, that the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives exceeded its authority when, in 2018, it banned bump stocks — devices that greatly increase the rate at which semiautomatic weapons can fire bullets.

Justice Clarence Thomas, writing the majority opinion, argued, "This case asks whether a bump stock…. converts the rifle into a 'machine gun.' We hold that it does not."

But Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in the dissenting opinion, vehemently disagreed.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) supported the ruling, and Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) is calling him out.

Expressing his opposition to a proposed bump stocks ban being considered in the U.S. Senate, Vance told reporters, "I think that we have to ask ourselves: What is the real gun violence problem in this country, and are we legislating in a way that solves fake problems? Or solves real problems? And my very strong suspicion is that the (Major Leader Chuck) Schumer legislation is aimed at a PR problem, not something that's going to meaningfully reduce gun violence in this country.”

But Rosen doesn't see it that way at all.

The Nevada Democrat told reporters, "This is not a fake problem. Let him come to Las Vegas. Let him see the memorial for those people who died (in a 2017 mass shooting). Let him talk to those families. It's not a fake problem. Those families are dead.'

Rosen continued, "Las Vegas was changed forever because of what the shooter did, and the bump stocks helped him. And let J.D. Vance come — and I'm going to take him to the memorials. We're going to talk to — talk about our first responders, our ambulance drivers, our police, our firefighters, people at the blood bank, regular people. Shame on him. Shame on him for disrespecting the dead."
