Estonia prison sentence for professor who spied for Russia

An ex-professor at the University of Tartu in Estonia has been sentenced to six years and three months in prison for spying for Russia.

On Tuesday, a court in Tallinn found the Russian citizen guilty of acting in the interests of, and on behalf of, a foreign secret service against the Republic of Estonia.

According to the security police, he had been spying for the Russian military intelligence service GRU. The academic is said to have collected information on the internal defence and security policy of the Baltic EU and NATO country, as well as related persons and infrastructure.

The professor was arrested by the Estonian security police in January and has been in custody ever since. The University of Tartu terminated his employment when he was charged. He had been working at the university since 2010.
